Hemoglobin is a metalloprotein in erythrocytes erythroid cells. It is an oxygen-carrying protein from the lungs towards the body. Hemoglobin is also abbreviated as “Hb” or “Hgb”. Hemoglobin is produced in the bone marrow then stored in the erythroid cells or red blood cells (RCBs).

Chemically Hemoglobin consists of four subunits of the protein named Beta-globin (2 subunits) and Alpha-globin (2 subunits).

There are some questions in the mind of people about hemoglobin, which they ask from a doctor, like

  • How can be Hb tested?
  • What is the normal hemoglobin level?
  • How to increase hemoglobin?

How Hemoglobin level tested

Hb or hemoglobin level can be tested with the help of a blood samples test and expressed in grams per deciliter. “Hb” is directly related to oxygen that’s why if “Hb” is low, its mean oxygen level will be low as compared with the body requirements. This condition is known as “Anemia”. The normal Hb value varies with age and gender but standard values are given below.

Normal hemoglobin ranges are

  • Above 12 g/dL in a woman
  • Above 13.5 g/dL in a man

Symptoms of Low Hemoglobin Level:

There are some common symptoms that express the low level of hemoglobin or Hb are given below

  • Irregular Heartbeat
  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Cold hand and feet
  • Change skin color (yellow or pale)

How to increase Hemoglobin In the Body

You can boost your Hb level by following different home remedies and eating foods. Details of such food are given below as;

Iron rich Foods

Anemia or a low level of hemoglobin is directly related to iron that’s why you can control your Hb level by consuming iron rich foods. Iron can increase the production of hemoglobin or hemoglobin. There are some iron-rich foods named; Eggs, meat, fish, soy products, dates, green beans,  spinach and kale, peanut butter, green vegetables, and dry fruits.

Increase Folate intake

Vitamin B can play an important role in the production of “Heme” which is the major component of Hemoglobin. On the other end, Folate is a kind of Vitamin B and it is also known as Vitamin B9, that’s why folate is very important in “Folate Deficiency Anemia”. Folate is manufactured by the folic acid that is produced by Vitamin B9.

Some good sources of folate include; beef, peanut, rice, spinach, lettuce, and the avocado fruit.

Increase Iron Absorption

Citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables, and barriers are rich sources of Vitamin C, it can maximize the absorption of iron. Besides this, Vitamin A is also important for iron absorption in the body. Vitamin A rich foods include fish, collards, squash, sweet potatoes, and liver.

You can also boost your iron uptake with the help of Beta-carotene foods such as sweet potatoes, mangoes, carrots, squashes.

Iron Supplements

In case of a very low level of hemoglobin, a doctor can suggest you some iron-rich food supplements depending upon the person's levels.

Iron supplements can be dangerous if taken too much. Hemoglobin is an Iron overloading disease that can lead to liver disease. Some other side effects can also be shown such as constipation and vomiting. So, the doctor's advice is very important, and consult with u our doctor before using Iron supplements.

What will happen if Anemia is not treated?

If you do not treat anemia, it can be dangerous for your health. There are some risk factors for hemoglobin or Hb, as
